There has been a growing trend of governments pushing for stricter age restrictions on minors’ access to social media platforms, such as Roblox, Instagram, Youtube, and more. Justified on the grounds of protecting the youth from either physical or emotional harm, the age restriction policies are enforced through either one of two methods: Government ID Checks, where the user will be required to send pictures of their government-issued ID (i.e., their driver’s license), or face recognition software, where the user will be required to upload their face onto a piece of software–usually involving AI to estimate their age based on biometric data.
